Ok, here is the scenario, and it is a real one. I will be purchasing a most likely brand new vehicle to replace Jazzie the Disco. The wife has said that I will be permitted to purchase another Land Rover some day down the road, but the time has come to put us into something reliable and sensible.

So here are my stipulations:

1. It must be at or under $40,ooo

2. It must be a "luxury-type" vehicle.

3. IT MUST HAVE A NICE LIVEABLE INTERIOR. (This almost automatically eliminates Toyota products.)

4. It must have leather and heated seats.

5. We do not want FWD, we very much prefer RWD but AWD is acceptible.

6. If it is used, it must: have very low mileage

be very reliable

be eligible for very good long term warranty coverage

7. It must be reasonably fun to drive and comfortable for 4-5 hour+ road trips.

8. Color options are as follows: Black, Silver, or possibly some kind of deep blue

Kinja'd!!!

I have previously suggested the 2015 Volvo V60 Polestar, but alas it was viewed as ugly by my better half. No big deal, to each their own. But at least she doesn't want an Audi anymore. This vehicle can be either foreign or domestic, but I have to clarify that it must be reliable, reasonably fun, useful, and a nice place to be for extended periods of time.

NO TAHOES/YUKONS/SUBURBANS/EXPEDITIONS/or any other gigantic suburban mama-assault vehicle.

NO two car situations. One vehicle only, none of this impractical track day miata and toyota camry bulshit either.

Honestly, I've heard that the Fusions are pretty fun to drive, and the Titanium level has AWD as an option. Heated seats, even a heated steering wheel.

And if the average performance isn't quite enough, you can ECU tune that mother. You can basically max out a Fusion at under 40K with still a very nice interior and more room than a Taurus.

NO TAHOES/YUKONS/SUBURBANS/EXPEDITIONS/or any other gigantic suburban mama-assault vehicle.

But what if it's supercharged ?

As for a real suggestion, I know you said no Toyota products but my girlfriend's brother has an AWD Lexus IS 350 and, as a huge BMW guy, I really like it. I drove it for 2 1/2+ hours once and it was a very nice place to be the entire time. And I drove my girlfriend's 2012 RX 450h from Charleston, SC to Connecticut (13 hours+ with traffic) and i was impressed with how much better it was than her old one. Lexus has seriously stepped its game up with their interiors. Plus a brand new IS 250 F Sport (RWD) or IS 350 (RWD) is right at your price point ($40,135). You don't have to add much to those cars, but nav and a premium sound system are available.

Plus I like the F Sport's grill. I know, I know. Some people think it's controversial, but I like it.

The new Golf Rs should be under $40k, but you'll need to wait for them, and probably end up paying MSRP if you want something new. Last-gen ones will be all over the place as far as price and quality.

I have a GTI, would not really recommend for a road trip car. It's doable, but really long highway runs are not the car's bright spot. The interior is fine, but the suspension tuning is a bit too stiff. The Tiguan is basically a lifted version, and will be a bit softer and more comfortable for longer drives.

Plus the VW blue really stands out in the sea of beige and black and silver cars elsewhere.

If you're looking used and want a BMW check out BMW CPO. They have warranties better than new, and cover up to 100,000 miles. We bought a then 2 year old 2008 750i for half of MSRP and that warranty was amazing for the car. BMW is great when it comes to handling warranty work as well plus it covers maintenance.

Or a new 328i is a great option. Very nice interior, and the 2.0T is a great engine especially with the ZF 8 speed.

Or if you want a Japanese car the new Acura TLX is really a great choice. 40k will get you one absolutely fully loaded. AWD, V6, 9speed auto.

Actually, the CTS can be had with a V6 for a mid-40s price if you need a bigger sedan. They have 8000$ cash back and you can probably haggle a bit more to free up some cash for options and whatnot. Or just look for one on the lot. It's stretching your budget a bit, but the CTS is a very nice sedan and, in my opinion, one of the best looking sedans on the market.

No problem! Lexus also has the best customer service I've ever encountered. My girlfriend's RX needed some maintenance so she called them, they came to her house, dropped off a loaner, took her car, and swapped them back when they were done. I also took her car to get an oil chance once and they washed and vacuumed the car for me "for free". Compared to going to the Jeep dealership, I thought I was in customer service heaven.

I absolutely love the RC. I would honestly be kind of torn between an RC F or an M4. I mean, I'm sorry BMW but you do not have an ass like this:

The RX is pretty boring, but the 450h has a seriously surprising amount of pickup. I'll be driving it up to Vermont in a few weeks and I was considering an Oppo review. It really is a good car... It's just not fun to drive.

You're kind of in the same boat as I am, except with a much larger budget.

A Volvo V70R is my 'perfect' vehicle but you want new, so a V60 R-Design would fit the bill nicely. I also considered the following:

CTS Wagon

Flex Ecoboost (or Taurus SHO if you want a sedan)

As long as we're talking sedans, I just purchased an Acura TL so the TLX might be a good bet

CPO BMW wagons (I now see that you're vetoing any BMWs- good man!)

Golf R

I saw your no american comment but I still have to put this.

Kinja'd!!!

485 motha-fuckin-HP! and the interior is way better now.

Also if you get it in a dark color it hides the double headlight thing.

Kinja'd!!!

(I'd bet you get a year old 350 F-sport for under $40k and its a lexus so its not going to break anytime soon).

I didn't say you should get it, just that it is available with a transmission other than a CVT.

Do you want the rear seats heated too? The Lincoln MKZ with the Reserve equipment group has heated front seats, rear seats, and steering wheel. I've had a hard time finding heated rear seats under $40k.

I know, and I would absolutely buy one, but the wife thinks they are too ugly.

Pros: good gas mileage

easy maintenance

great power

great space

great quality and value for money

cons:

looks (to her )

The style can be polarizing. My mom loves them but my stepdad hates them. Is it something that could grow on her with a test drive. I would be willing to drive an ugly car if it checked all my boxes otherwise

I agree the RC coupe in general (even the base model) has a better presence than the M4. I'm sur eint he next few years they will refine the front end and it will look much better.

Must have 4 doors. And the beltline on the challenger, charger, and 300 would make it vrey difficult for my 5'2" wife to drive. Greenhouse is a rare item these days, just consider how much greenhouse she has in the LR. 2-3 ft in some places

I love love love M series BMW's but we need a family car and basically something for her that will last, she is very good on taking care of things so I have no doubt whatever we get so long as it is warranteed it will last 10-15 years. Maybe then I can purchase an e39 M5 and restore it.

No probably just front seats. But I guess our little Chihuahua would be more likely to stay in the backseat if it were heated.

Maybe, I will of course be gen-ing up a finalists list at the end of the day and then running them all by her. Then we will make selections based on user forum reviews and then test drive our top picks. I am suddenly getting the idea for a March-Madness style finalists bracket.

^I'm going to build this up: Sub $40k mid-size luxury vehicle Championships.

Well like I said, 50K is just with all of the options. Like, literally a fully loaded everything. So just don't get all the options.

But if you don't want a Hyundai, that's one thing.

I am not aversed to a Hyundai, but 50k is too much for even the best Hyundai. Their past transgressions of the automotive variety have put them in a situation where they need to reassess their vehicle pricing.

Starts at $37k and the "premium" model is $40k.

If only the front seats need to be warmed you can get an Infiniti Q40, RWD, leather heated seats, moon roof, and Navigation Plus Package with MRSP and Delivery under $40k.

Ok, so you've stated no German, no American. So Japanese is your choice. Just get an Acura or Lexus if you want a luxury car.

I did not rule American cars at all, see the ATS/CTS and Ford/Lincoln suggestions. German makes, no mater how much I like them for the dynamics of driving are going to prove to be expensive to maintain over an extended period of ownership. The goal is for this brand new/extremely lightly used car to last at least 10-15 years. With a German car, that would most likely require paying double the original cost, when ou include maintenance.

Kinja'd!!!1

So even with that said, for a car you want to last 10-15 years I'd still go with Japanese. ATS/CTS have relatively new turbo engines that have yet to be tested in their longevity, same with Ford/Lincoln with the 3.5 Ecoboost, if you want a Flex or MKS. Infiniti/Acura/Lexus all have V6 engines that have been in service for at least a decade in one form or another and have proven to be reliable. I'd stay away from anything with forced induction if you want reliability over a decade.

I'd still pick a TLX, it has AWD with the V6, under $40k, will be more fun than the bigger MKS or Flex but still bigger than the ATS or Lexus IS, more reliable than an ATS, and personally think has more of a "luxury brand" image than Lincoln/Ford.
